People @ Personio – Minh Tran, SDR Nordics
What is your current position at Personio?
Currently, I work as a Sales Development Representative for Team Nordics. My job is to develop and implement strategies for outbound lead generation. Generally, this means creating interest for HR Managers or recruiters from small- and medium-sized companies in our Personio software. This includes researching and identifying companies that might benefit from implementing a tool like Personio and then actively approaching them.
A big part of this is learning about our target market. What characteristics do our customers share? What are their processes like? What challenges do they face? What goals do they have? And most importantly, how can Personio help?

How has your professional journey at Personio been?
I started working at Personio almost exactly 1.5 years ago. Since I was still studying at the time, I joined the company and Team Partnerships as a working student. Two months in, I transitioned into a full-time internship with a brand new 6-month contract.
We were a team of three working on everything partnership-related. Work was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the company in general. Good vibes, fun people, a great work atmosphere and an employer that really cares about its people. So, we extended my internship by a couple of months. There is even a picture of Michael and me when I signed the second contract. 😀
At the beginning of the new year, Personio opened the new London office. Then the company offered me what might sound a little bit cheesy, but what I felt was a "once in a lifetime opportunity": having the chance to move to the new location and be there with the team for the UK launch. So, I packed my bags and spent three months in this huge city working alongside Team International. Amazing times as well and so much learned during this stint abroad.
I still didn't want to leave the company, so I applied for the SDR role in Team Nordics. I was super hyped and excited when the team offered me a full-time contract. I immediately signed and I am so happy to be working alongside an amazing team, enabling better organizations in the Nordics. This has been my journey so far, but we are only starting out!
What has been the experience that you enjoyed the most in all this time?
The experience that I liked the most must have been celebrating a big milestone in summer 2019. It’s not just the party itself that will forever be memorable. For me, it was also the time leading up to that day.
The whole company was working towards reaching this huge milestone. Everybody was talking about it and trying to contribute as much as possible. The whole team gave their best and once we actually reached the goal, obviously we celebrated thoroughly. Great memories.
What is the most remarkable thing about Personio for you?
The one thing that stands out to me the most, is everyone who works here. Personio feels like a very smoothly-integrated group of people. We get along really well. I couldn’t name a single person that I wouldn’t get along with.
This makes coming into work every day just so much easier. Even if there are hard times at work and there’s just too much to do, you still look forward to coming to work because of the people (that have become really good friends as well!).
How would you describe a typical good day at Personio nowadays?
First thing in the morning, getting coffee and a bowl of Cini-Minis – the breakfast of champions. Some sparkling water as well. Now, carry everything to the desk without dropping anything.
First success of the day! Let’s use this momentum and get some calls out of the way and try to generate some interest in Personio before the first meeting of the day. Mornings are always packed because people are motivated and still full of energy.
Once we move towards noon, I get my emails done, send out a few messages and start browsing LinkedIn, searching for sales triggers. Who might be in need of a new HR system?12 PM, lunch time (this is Germany after all!). I always like to get out of the office for lunch and get some fresh air. I can highly recommend upstairs at Slemani Grill in Munich. Ok, the air might not be fresh there, but the food is amazing!
Now, back to the office, getting an espresso… Or two… Fighting the food coma!
The afternoon is different everyday. Best case however: do a little bit of calling, write some emails and then get into a meeting marathon will all of these companies that are interested in Personio.
5 PM(ish). Getting another coffee because why not. Catching up with some colleagues, sharing successes. Sounds like a pretty good day to me!
What advice would you give to anyone who is looking to start a career as SDR?
SDRing can be like a roller coaster – with lots of highs and lows. The most important thing is to be diligent, show resilience and to not let rejections get to you. Keep your head up when you are struggling and push even harder when you are up high.
People at Personio don’t come to work just to earn money; it’s the impact that drives us.
Which Operating Principle drives you the most?
Driven by impact! I really enjoy working at Personio and coming into the office. I enjoy working together with all these people here because you can feel that everyone is super motivated and determined to contribute to this insane journey that Personio is on.
People at Personio don’t come to work just to earn money; it’s the impact that drives us.
And this doesn’t just apply to the first couple tens of employees. Today, we are more than 500 Personios and everybody knows more than ever how their own work is contributing to the success of the company.
What is the most fun part of your job?
The most fun part of the job is getting to celebrate successes together – and there have been a lot of successes in the past. So many legendary parties. Unfortunately, the current pandemic prevents us from doing this face to face at the moment. But we also came up with nice different remote and safe ways to celebrate still. However, I am sure that there will be a big night in the future when we are going to celebrate our success all together again, and I’m really looking forward to it.
